Cebu is a tourist hotbed for a good reason. Its numerous beaches and other natural wonders are worth a visit.

Local and foreign visitors often flock to popular destinations, such as Lapu Lapu City’s famous beaches. According to a recent report, the city welcomed 66,065 foreign tourists from January to August 2022. It doesn’t have its “Historic Resort City” moniker for nothing!

As great as those resorts are, here’s something else that may entice you: Northern Cebu. The island’s northern side has plenty of picturesque tourist spots. To that end, here’s a list of well-known and underrated destinations you’ll want to add to your bucket list.

Malapascua Island

Pictured above is the island of Malapascua. Although it only has a 1.48 km2 area, it packs a huge punch because of its rich marine life. If the sight of creatures like thresher sharks fascinates you, this northern Cebu island is calling your name.

Local and foreign divers visit Malapascua to get a taste of underwater life. But if you’re not into diving, that’s fine! It has more to offer than just diving spots.

The island hasn’t experienced much commercial development compared to its neighbor, Bantayan (which we’ll get into a little later), so it’s perfect for low-key tropical getaways. The most commercialized spot is Bounty Beach, so you may want to head down there if you don’t mind crowds. Want some peace and quiet? You’ll enjoy basking in some sunshine on hidden gems like Guimbitayan Beach.

Paharuhay Campsite

Can you imagine sleeping under the stars? This next tourist spot may tickle your fancy!

Paharuhay Campsite lies atop a hill in Tabogon. The owners originally built the place for themselves as an escape from their busy lives. However, they changed their minds after realizing that its beauty deserves to be enjoyed by many.

The site offers campers a 360° view of the surrounding sea and mountains. It has a treehouse with a balcony that’s best enjoyed during sunsets and sunrises. Other amenities include a freshwater pool, a fire pit, bathrooms, a barbecue grill, and a fully-equipped kitchen.

If you’re planning to spend the night with a group, you can rent the site’s Peak Exclusive Campground. Smaller groups and solo travelers can also opt for the Malinawon Teepees, Tiny Cabins, and the Matahom and Mahogany Grove Shared Campgrounds.

Cebu Transcentral Highway

You may think there isn’t much to enjoy on a long strip of concrete. Wait until you come across this highway.

The Cebu Transcentral Highway (or TCH) is a 33-kilometer road bisecting northwestern and central Cebu. If you’re coming from a Balamban trip, you can quickly reach Cebu City through this route. It’s a hit among bikers and road trippers for its scenic views. If you want to take pictures, make sure to park your vehicle at a safe spot to avoid accidents. You may want to pack a sweater or jacket with you since it has a chilly atmosphere.

TCH has many dining options as well. You’ll be surprised by the hole-in-the-wall cafes and restaurants you’ll encounter. If you’re up for a road trip, it’s the perfect place to do it.

Arapal Nature Retreat

Farms have hit a new level of popularity since the pandemic. Some have become famous tourist spots because of their relaxing environment. If you want a break from reality, this one’s right up your alley.

Arapal Nature Retreat is located in Bogo. Their mission is to help farmers earn through teaching organic farming methods. This off-the-grid destination offers hiking and breathtaking views. It also has organic farming workshops, organic food, and goat milking! Visitors can also enjoy an overnight stay in their various rooms.

Bantayan Island

This last destination is, perhaps, the most famous one on this list. When people look up Northern Cebu tourist spots, this one usually comes up first during searches.

Bantayan Island is at Cebu’s northernmost tip. Its pristine white sand and clear waters draw tons of visitors all year round. The municipality of Santa Fe is where most of the action is, being the island’s tourism center.

Tourists won’t have a problem finding a place to stay due to the many options, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly accommodations. I recommend staying on the island for two to three days to make the most of your trip.

Explore a new side of Cebu and make your way to the island’s northern side. These tourist spots (and more) are awaiting curious visitors like you.
