DATING
Do Women Talk More than Men on Dates?
As the old Chinese proverb goes, “The tongue is the sword of a woman, and she never lets it become rusty.”
Talking is a big part of the dating process.
Imagine if you and your date are shy and scared to talk to each other. Aside from things getting awkward, it becomes a waste of time for both of you.
So why bother?
But then if you go on a date with a woman who is talkative, you may end up being stuck in a one-sided conversation all night.
While women are generally known to talk too much in conversations, circumstances will vary.
Which brings us to the question, do women talk more than men on dates?
Here are some factors to consider.
Some Women Tend to Overshare
Both sexes talk a lot. But when it comes to who talks more on dates, it will depend on the context of the conversation.
When women are genuinely enjoying a conversation, it can be hard to stick to one subject. They may think about other related topics or experiences as the conversation progresses. Either you finish the first topic you were talking about or both of you completely forget about it.
They can talk about multiple topics at the same time because they feel like it is a more intimate way of building a connection.
Women may do this if they feel comfortable with the person they’re talking to — whether it be their friend or their date. Or, it could be that they want to vent and they’re looking for someone who will listen to them.
Some women can also talk so much that they forget what they were talking about in the first place.
According to Deborah Tannen, a professional linguist and author, in her published book about female friendship, she claims that women open up the most when it comes to personal matters, especially when the person they’re talking to shows interest in what they’re saying.
They can start talking about random things in life, maybe even how they do their hair and nails. An average woman can talk about her problems for hours just so she can destress.
Then again, while it can keep the conversation going, it might not be productive or valuable for the other person.
Women Are Active in Verbal Communication
… according to science.
According to research conducted at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, women have higher brain power for verbal communication, making their brains active in speech and communication.
This is also because the protein called FOXP2, which is the key factor in the communication among mammals, has a higher percentage in women than men.
Researchers evaluated a group of children and found that 30% of them, which were girls, have more of the said protein.
Even research backs it up by claiming that women speak about 20,000 words per day more than men on average.
Well, that’s a lot of words. But not for women.
Women Admire Engaging Conversations
For women, talking is a means to bond and build relationships with people. They can go on and on about their day-to-day problems and discuss their relationships.
According to an article written by Ginka Togel, she believes that women’s language is driven by the desire to engage the other party in the conversation. From a woman’s perspective, the length for which she speaks makes sense given this goal.
It’s not just about how they talk, but it also matters what they talk about. That creates a contrast between the two genders.
Women are verbally expressive with their feelings and they use more emotional words than men.
Some studies suggest that women may be more likely to engage in conversations related to personal experience, relationships, and emotions, which can involve more extensive dialogs.
In contrast, men may or may not only focus on topics such as sports, technology, or current events, which may involve shorter and more focused conversations.
The myth about women talking more than men still exists today. And the claims that women are chatterboxes are still widespread, causing a lot of studies to be published in order to prove a point on who talks more between a man and a woman.
So, when do women talk more than men?
Well, unlike men, women may have their ways on how to verbalize their own feelings. They also use the power of words in order to seek solace and understanding from other people.
On the other hand, men are less likely to open up easily to others.
Take note that we all have our own way of expressing our emotions and feelings. This is why men and women portray their emotions differently as well.
